AFR Mag Celebrates Its 20th Birthday

Fairfax Media’s The Australian Financial Review Magazine, the country’s first monthly newspaper inserted glossy magazine, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a special 92-page issue out today.

The special issue looks at the technological revolution and asks why, when technology has become the leitmotif of the times, we seem to be living in an age of nostalgia. The AFR Magazine interviews some of Australia’s wealthiest families about life and love, inheritance and giving back.

“This is a symbolic milestone for The AFR Magazine, a moment in which to look backwards as well as forwards,” The AFR Magazine editor Katrina Strickland said.

“The magazine has changed with the times, being published digitally across desktop and tablets today as well as in the traditional glossy, large format print. But its core mission of reporting issues of substance with style and matters of style with substance, with all the independence, integrity and depth that its host paper is renowned for, has remained remarkably stable.”

To celebrate its anniversary, The AFR Magazine hosted a private dinner at Sydney’s est. restaurant earlier this week. Foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop addressed the audience of more than 80 key advertisers on her 20 years in politics, while Fairfax media chief executive Greg Hywood recalled launching the magazine in 1995, when he was editor of the AFR newspaper.

Inserted into The Australian Financial Review on the last Friday of each month, The AFR Magazine has always been a pioneer, with annual signature issues on Fashion, Design, Wealth and Power.
