Global travel tour group Contiki has made the most of some negative press involving one of Australia’s Olympic teams by offering them a “trip of a lifetime”.
Ed Jenkins, captain of the men’s rugby sevens team (presently representing Australia in Rio), likened playing for Australia a few years ago to a Contiki tour in a recent interview with Fairfax.
“When I started, it was more like a Contiki tour,” he said.
“You would literally meet up a week before the tournament, meet the guys because the squad would change from tournament to tournament. You’d run through a few moves, then hop on the plane, enjoy your week over there, play some rugby on the weekends, then fly to the next stop.”
In response to Jenkins’ comments, Contiki reached out to the rugby sevens star on Twitter and offered him and the rest of Australia’s Olympic team to come on a tour of Vietnam following the games, to which Jenkins accepted.
“Ed’s experience with the Rugby Sevens sounded terrible!” A Contiki spokesperson said.
“He obviously isn’t familiar with how Contiki rolls and our quality experiences, so we decided to invite him and his teammates on a trip of a lifetime. They have happily accepted to get on board a Contiki trip to Vietnam soon and we look forward to welcoming them!”
