Channel Nine sports reporter and Melbourne radio host, Tony Jones (in main picture), has been lambasted and labelled a “goose” after he suggested that women’s tennis great Serena Williams could beat troubled Aussie star Nick Kyrgios.

Jones was speaking on his 3AW radio show yesterday regarding John McEnroe’s new book titled But Seriously where the tennis legend called Sarena Williams the greatest female tennis player ever, before adding she wouldn’t be in the top 700 male players.

However, Jones decided to take things a step further, suggesting Williams would beat Kyrgios due to his often precarious mental state out on the court that leads him prone to outbursts and giving-up altogether.

“I agree with him on one point –  I think she would beat Nick Kyrgios,” Jones told 3AW listeners.

“I say that because she has a power game, there’s no doubt about that.

“But he touched on something that is more important, especially when you’re playing something like Nick Kyrgios whose brittle above the shoulders — it’s a mind game as well.

“Her mental strength alone would see her get the better of someone like Nick Kyrgios – I’d back her in.”

Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt was first to tweet his support for Kyrgios, labelling Jones a “goose”.

Hewitt’s tweet read, ” Haha… Good comment Chompers you goose!”

“Chompers” is an apparent dig at Jones’ overly white teeth and a nickname the reporter supposedly hates.

Kyrgios himself was soon tweeting, suggesting if he could give top 10 male players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic a run for their money out on centre court then Serena would, by his logic, beat them too.

However, Kyrgios appeared to find a lot of support for his cayuse. His fans tweeting:
