Celebrate! It’s The 10th Anniversary Of The Best/Worst Interview In TV History! It’s BBC’s Guy Goma!
Here at B&T we love the incompetent, the naff, the downright strange! In fact, we celebrate it!
So when we heard it was the tenth anniversary of one of the most cringeworthy moments in television history we simply had to acknowledge it.
For those who don’t remember, or weren’t even born, it centred around the wonderfully brilliant/hapless would-be BBC employee, Guy Goma.
Mr Goma turned up to the BBC studios in London in May 2006 hoping to snare a job at the UK’s biggest public broadcaster in an IT role. The exact job title was data support cleanser.
At the same time, Guy Kewney, a UK tech expert and IT editor was waiting in reception to go live to air to discuss copyright issues with Apple’s iTunes, namely to do with The Beatle’s back catalogue.
In the most wonderful mix-up in TV history, Goma was mistakenly called from BBC reception and soon found himself answering questions intended for Kewney.
BBC staffers put on makeup and Goma was ushered to the television studio, where he was seated in front of the cameras and wired-up with a microphone believing it was all part of the job interview when, in fact, he was going live to air.
Aware of the fact that he was now on live television with BBC broadcaster Karen Bowerman, the super-cool Goma chose to simply soldier-on. Albeit in a very heavy Congolese accent.
Meanwhile, the intended interviewee, Guy Kewney, could do nothing more than sit back in the BBC Green Room and enjoy the wonderful debacle as his doppelgänger bumbled through.
