It’s definitely the one weekend of the year where you want to be a free to air television broadcaster. Yes, it’s footy grand final weekend, where host broadcasters can look forward to their best sets of eyeballs all year.

So did Saturday’s AFL ding-dong between the West Coast Eagles and the Collingwood Magpies better the NRL’s Sunday offering between the Melbourne Storm and the Sydney Roosters?

And the winner is…? Seven and the AFL! Saturday’s game, won by the Eagles in a thriller, pulling 2.601 million metro viewers according to OzTam numbers.

Meanwhile, last night’s NRL grand final – won by the Roosters 21-6 – gave Nine 2.122 million league loving eyeballs.

The AFL match averaged 2.601 million throughout – 1.25 million in Melbourne – however, went as high as 2.63 million for the final minutes and the presentation.

Saturday’s game was down on 2017’s grand final that pulled 2.68 million at its peak.

Meanwhile, last night’s match could have suffered due to the unpopularity of the teams. Despite a strong fan base in Melbourne, the Storm is widely disliked in Sydney and Brisbane. While the Sydney Roosters are often derided for its lack of supporters and claims it simply buys the best players to win.

Last night’s NRL match was also down on 2017’s numbers that pulled 2.33 million viewers when the Storm triumphed over the North Queensland Cowboys.

As you’d expect, the footy gave Nine a hefty share of the audience last night. Nine took home a commanding 47.6 per cent, Seven had to settle for 23.2 per cent, ABC had 13.7 per cent, Ten had single digits and 9.5 per cent and SBS had 5.9 per cent.
