Al Jazeera Journalists Sentenced To At Least Three Years In Jail

Al Jazeera journalists Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been sentenced to at least three years in jail after a retrial in Cairo.

The trio were charged with operating in Egypt without a licence and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the ABC.

Greste had previously been deported to Australia in February, however his Al Jazeera colleagues were taken back into custody.

“Whatever the consequences, the fact is that this is a judgment that is not based on evidence,” Greste told Al Jazeera shortly.

“Anyone who watched the trial, and we had many people broadcasting or reporting on the trial … none saw any evidence to substantiate the allegations.”

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop also released a statement about the verdict.

“I am dismayed by the decision today of the Egyptian District Court, which has found Peter Greste guilty of broadcasting offences,” the statement read.

“This is a distressing outcome for Mr Greste, his family and supporters.

“I have spoken with Mr Greste today and reaffirmed that I will continue to pursue all diplomatic avenues with my Egyptian counterpart to clear his name.

“Mr Greste has indicated that he will consult his lawyers regarding all legal options.”
