There were thousands of people filling the seats of the MCG and millions tuned into Seven’s broadcast of the AFL 2013 Grand Final.

But there were many fans – 208,602 to be precise – watching the game via social media and news sites.

Of the 200,000 plus online mentions 160,704 were driven by Twitter users.

The result outstrips the reports filed by news outlets which contributed to 45,388 mentions.

During Twitter’s daily peak on the 28th of September there were 55,142 messages related to the AFL Grand Final.

A random sample of 3,000 AFL related tweets since September 14 show the vast majority originated in Melbourne.

More to come.
