Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop has confirmed the A-League will be moving back to SBS2 in what must be a blow for the fledgling competition and football in Australia generally.

With the A-League season kicking off in less than a month, Gallop has confirmed the game will be moving back down to SBS2 after attempts to move the sport to free-to-air broadcast failed.

On Wednesday in Melbourne, Gallop said: “It’s been reasonably well documented that FFA and SBS have explored alternatives. The game of (AFL and NRL rights) musical chairs has stopped with the season so close.

“We’re expecting to be on SBS2 and we’ll work hard with SBS to make it work.”

The move happens after Channel Nine sign a $925 million dollar deal for the NRL rights till 2022 and Channel Seven landed a $2.5 billion dollar contract for the AFL rights until 2022.

Gallop said despite the downsize, he was “optimistic about our ability to have an improved year for TV ratings. We didn’t quite hit the numbers that we’d like to have hit (last season).

“But if you look across the rosters of the ten teams we think we’re going to have a highly competitive season.”
