X Factor debut shines brighter than Big Brother

The X Factor crowned the ratings on its first outing for the year last night, beating the launch of Nine’s Big Brother.

The first episode of The X Factor won top spot for Seven with 1.633 million viewers, according to OzTam’s preliminary metro ratings.

The talent contest outperformed Big Brother, which came fourth with an audience of 1.309 million.

The new season of Seven’s Please Marry My Boy won an audience of 861,000 at 9pm last night.

Ten’s best performing programs were Ten News at Five (744,000) and MasterChef Australia in 18th place with 684,000 viwers.

Seven took the largest share of all free-to-air viewers across its channels yesterday with 31.5%. Nine came second with 29.1%, followed by the ABC with 19% and TEN on 15.6%. SBS took 4.8%.
