What about Sandilands and Jones, says fired radio host

Howard Sattler believes asking the Prime Minister if her partner is gay is not a sackable offence, saying shock jocks Alan Jones, Kyle Sandilands and the Hot 30 DJs have done worse.

Sattler, who was fired from his drive-time presenting role on Fairfax’s  Perth station 6PR last week, defended his actions on Seven this morning.

"What about these people – people who grilled a 13-year-old rape victim, a threat to hunt down a female journalist, harass the English nurse to subsequent suicide, say that Julia Gillard's father died of shame over her policies, that Ms Gillard should be bagged and dumped into the sea," Sattler told Seven this morning.

"Now don't you think my question paled into insignificance ahead of all those things?

"All those people are still on air. I've lost my job."

In a statement announcing Sattler’s termination, 6PR said his line of questioning was “disrespectful” and “entirely inappropriate”. Fairfax Radio Network is facing another scandal with a 3AW presenter more recently being accused of "victim blaming" over her comments about the Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi choking pictures.

On Sunrise this morning Sattler, who until now had made regular appearances on the program as a guest speaker, defended his actions saying he had told Prime Minister Julia Gillard that she could stop the interview at any stage if she was uncomfortable before it started.

When the Sunrise presenters asked if he would do it again he said: “No, because I can’t afford to lose my job.”

Sattler has reportedly said he is considering taking legal action over his termination.

The “died of shame” comments Sattler refers to were made by 2GB presenter Alan Jones late last year. The comments caused a huge consumer backlash leading brands to pull advertising. Macquarie Radio Network then suspended advertising to stem the flow.

The reference to the “grilled” 13-year-old and verbal abuse of a female journalist is about 2DayFM’s Kyle Sandilands and the English nurse comment refers to 2DayFM’s Hot 30 royal prank phone call.

One of the DJs involved in the prank phone call recently won an internal Southern Cross Austereo Next Top Jock award.
