State of Origin watched by millions

More than 2.5 million rugby fans tuned in to see Queensland defeat New South Wales in the decider of the State of Origin.

The match, which saw the blues lose by just two points with a final score of 12-10 – and a streaker to add to the excitement, was watched on Nine by 2.586 million people last night.

A total of 1.768 million also switched on for the pre-match broadcast, according to figures from audience measurement body Oztam.

Channel Nine took out six spots in the top 10 most-watched free-to-air TV shows last night, including spots one to five.

Nine News and The Block Sky High tied in third place, both with audiences of 1.343 million, while the post-match State of Origin coverage was watched by 1.335 million people.

Nine’s A Current Affair came in seventh, with 1.142 people switching on.

Completing the top 10 were Seven News (sixth place, 1.211 million), Seven’s Today Tonight (eighth place, 1.024 million), ABC News (ninth place, 902,000) and Seven’s Home and Away (tenth place, 899,000).

Network Ten’s Masterchef Australia just missed out on the top 10, with 747,000 pairs of eyes tuning in.
