NRL battles beat political battles with Origin taking 2.235m

Oztam's official ratings are in for Wednesday’s evening of all-round battles in politics and sport with Origin taking 2.235m.

The leadership challenge overtook scheduling across all channels and near interrupted the widely anticipated NSW vs Qld State of Origin, but despite the history making moment for Australian politics, audiences were more interested in the game.

Oztam’s official ratings showing 2.235m tuned in for the match on Channel Nine and 1.721m for the pre-match. The Nine News Special ran up until six minutes before the announcement of Rudd’s win to cut to the State of Origin when near 700,000 extra viewers tuned in. The extended news coverage of the political battle cut out a double episode of The Block Sky High and A Current Affair, but with the game and political coverage combined,  Nine took 33.2% of audiences.

ABC’s Live Leadership Ballot coverage beat Channel Seven’s with 977,000 against 897,000 viewers respectively along with Today Tonight which had 927,000. That said, Seven News took 1.211m with the Seven network taking only 16.1% according to the preliminary ratings, while ABC had 14.3%, Ten had 10% and SBS had 2.1%.
