The Women’s Empowerment Journalism Awards launched by Diageo open for entries in the new year.

Full release below.

Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks company, has recently launched the inaugural Women’s Empowerment (WE) Journalism Awards to recognise and honour outstanding achievements in the reporting of women’s issues.

The WE Journalism Awards aim to inspire, nurture and advance quality reporting on women’s empowerment issues.

This regional initiative is part of Diageo’s ‘Plan W: Empowering Women through Learning’ program which was launched in 2012.

Submissions for the awards are now open and journalists are welcome to submit their entries via the awards website, www.WEJournalismAwards.com.

We would appreciate your help to spread the word about the awards and encourage your colleagues/contacts to submit an entry.

The WE Journalism Awards 2014 is open to journalists in 10 markets across the Asia Pacific region including Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

All entries will go through a preliminary round of assessment by an Australian judging panel who will determine the top three finalists for each category.

These shortlisted finalists will then be judged by a panel of three regional judges who will select a winner for each of the following award categories:

  • Print Story of the Year
  • Broadcast Story of the Year
  • Online Story of the Year
  • Photograph of the Year
  • Journalist of the Year

Short-listed finalists from across the region will be invited to attend a gala awards ceremony to be held in Singapore on Friday, 7 March 2014, where the winners will be announced.

The winner of each category will receive a prize worth up to US$10,000 which includes a cash prize of US$1,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to London to attend the prestigious Trust Women Conference in December 2014.

Demonstrating our dedication to empowering women, in 2012 Diageo became the first beverage alcohol company to sign up to the UN Women's Empowerment Principles (UNWEP) to promote gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community.

We hope to continue this great work through the WE Journalism Awards and would like your help to pass on the news of our awards to your colleagues.

We will be accepting submissions which are published or broadcast from the period of 1 January 2012 – 26 January 2014.

The deadline for entry in Australia is Friday, 31 January 2014 and the judging by the Australian judging panel will commence on Thursday, 6 February 2014.
