Paul Walker’s death most viewed story on ninemsn

Celebrity news has dominated the audience on ninemsn this year, with the tragic death of Paul Walker being the number one most viewed story across the ninemsn network.

The annual figures released by ninemsn today take us through what made headlines this year as well as which stories were the most viewed in 2013.

Miley Cyrus’s infamous twerking at the VMAs took second place with just over half a million views, closely followed by the reports of a Sydney high school’s ‘formal snub’ neglecting a special needs student from their Year 10 formal.

Weird and wacky stories also grabbed the audience’s attention as news about the first venomous crustacean found in WA secured the title of fourth most read story on ninemsn and a chicken ‘brain’ found in a KFC meal received the third highest number of shares across Facebook, email and Twitter, as well as being the fifth most read article overall.

The most watched video of 2013 was awarded to a slightly shaky film documenting a terrified passenger’s battle against a red-bellied black snake on their windscreen, and Today’s Karl Stefanovic’s prank on co-host Roz Kelly came in third.

While political stories perhaps didn’t garner the most views, they became top of the leader board for the number of comments.

The most commented article overall on ninemsn was when the Liberal Party was accused of stealing private Facebook information which received 3,963 comments.

As well as being the most viewed story, the Fast and the Furious star’s tragic death was also the most shared story around social media with 36,550 shares.

The KFC ‘brain’ also grabbed a number of shares, coming in third for the most shared story of 2013.

“From light-hearted stories to hard-hitting events, it's been a busy year for news at home and around the world,” Hal Crawford, ninemsn editor-in-chief, said.

“The diversity of the most highly read, shared and engaged with content in this year's ninemsn chart goes to show just how hungry Australians are for varied and compelling stories across a broad range of issues.

“No one knows what 2014 will bring – a second royal baby? Warnie tying the knot? But I'm betting we see video continue to climb and a fair contribution from weird yet wonderful stories.”
