The popular comedy sitcom How I Met Your Mother has recently come under fire for one of its episodes for what many have deemed as ‘racist’.

After the show’s airing on Monday night in the US, Twitter was overrun with tweets about the some of the show’s main characters dubbing what viewers are calling “yellowface”.

Viewers took to Twitter to express how they felt about the episode.

Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have taken to Twitter to apologise for the show and to hope they can “regain your friendship, and end this series on a note of goodwill”.

How I Met Your Mother is in its 9th season with the controversial episode set to air next month on Seven.
