News said Gardner was leaving to persue his career outside of the group.

“News' CEO Kim Williams said: “Phil has had a fine career at News Limited and made a significant contribution to our company. He arrived in Australia from South Africa in 1985 with 200 dollars in his pocket and worked his way through the ranks in a variety of roles in Melbourne and Adelaide to become editor-in-chief of Australia’s biggest selling daily newspaper, the Herald Sun. Phil has played a central role in driving the transformation program in Melbourne with the establishment of a single editorial desk and a seven day newsroom.”

Meanwhile, Fairfax has axed two lifestyle managers.

It has been confirmed that Lisa Hudson, general manager of food and wine and Lauren Quaintance, general manager of travel have left the group.

Life Media director Melina Cruickshank told staff in an email yesterday the restructure was driven by the need for the company to meet “cost commitments”.
