Following his surprise departure as the head of the Australian Financial Review Group yesterday, industry sources have confirmed that Brett Clegg is set for a return to a senior role at rival News Corp Australia.

Although News refused to be drawn on matter when contacted by B&T this morning, one possible port of call for Clegg could be the vacant regional director for NSW at the publishing giant, which would include the likes of The Daily TelegraphThe Sunday Telegraph and a vast stable of regional papers.

Michael Miller previously held this role but he left to become CEO at APN News & Media earlier this year.

The move would mark yet another change of stables for Clegg, who took the role of CEO of the Financial Review group in early 2011, moving back to Fairfax from The Australian after little more than a year, having started out as a cadet at the AFR.

The Australian confirmed his latest switch back to News this morning. Sydney Morning Herald editor in chief Sean Aylmer will take over Clegg’s duties at Fairfax.
