They may lay claim to the most valuable football (soccer) brand on the planet, but a new survey has found it cost Manchester United £4.1 million ($A8 million) for each goal it netted during last season’s English premier League (EPL).
A study by The Independent newspaper combined the total cost of players in the team divided by the amount of goals they scored and discovered Man Utd’s goals are the EPL’s most expensive.
However, it’s not all bad news for the Manchester Club – who finished fifth in this year’s EPL – following a Brand Finance study released on Monday that showed the club had an overall brand value of $US1.17bn ($A1.59 million).
It follows on from Optus’ procurement of the EPL rights in Australia.
Undoubtedly the surprise packet of this year’s EPL where minions Leicester who went on to achieve one of sport’s great fairytales winning the tournament. Of the 20 Premier League teams its goals, according to the The Independent’s study, cost it a paltry £708,000 ($A1.4 million) and made it the second cheapest on the list behind Bournemouth (who finished the season at 16th).
According to the study, it cost these teams this much for each goal it scored in the 2016 season (all amounts in pounds):

- Liverpool – £2.4 million
- Aston Villa – £2.4 million
- Bromwich Albion – £2 million

- Spurs – £1.6 million
- Sunderland – £1.4 million
- Crystal Palace – £1.3 million
- Everton – £1.2 million
