Study: Under-ripe Avocados, Forgetting Passwords & A Prosecco Shortage Now Gen Y’s Biggest Worries

Forget buying a home or career advancement – a new study out of the UK has found that modern Millennials’ biggest worries today include having to suffer under-ripe avocados or, heaven forbid, a Prosecco shortage.

The rather bizarre findings are the result of a study by Goldsmiths, University of London and were commissioned by electronics firm HTC and included the responses of 2000 people aged 18-70.

Researchers wanted to compare the “first world” worries of Gen Ys today versus those of previous generations. It found that 20 years ago, the three biggest worries were having a good relationship, money issues and getting into the property market.

Alongside Prosecco woes, today’s Gen Y Brits’ biggest fears also include leaving their phones at home, forgetting passwords, not getting any likes on Instagram, and having to wait at home for the Amazon delivery guy to deliver their online shopping.

The poll also found one in three Brits complained of “avocado anxiety” – or an irrational fear of the fruit being too mushy or too hard.

Commenting on the study, Patrick Fagan, a behavioural psychologist at Goldsmiths, said that modern-day concerns have now transmuted into more “fickle problems”.

Fagan commented: “Although we’re earning more money as a country, life satisfaction has barely moved.

“In our comfortable lives, we might have enough money for bills or a holiday, but it’s in our nature never to be satisfied,” he said.

Another interesting fact out of the study was that those aged 50-plus believed that those in their 20s today led much busier lives and had to work harder, too.
