Star Trek’s U.S.S. Discovery Soars Over New York (Thanks To Some Aussie Engineering)

New York residents were greeted by an unusual flying object on Saturday when The U.S.S. Discovery blasted off into the night sky to promote the premiere of CBS show Star Trek: Discovery.

But while diehard Trekkies’ may have thought science fiction had finally become science fact, the U.S.S. Discovery was in fact a visual illusion created by Australian owned aerial media and experiential company Remarkable Media.

To mark the reboot of the hugely popular series which launched in the US on Sunday, CBS which recently acquired Network Ten, commissioned Remarkable Media to recreate the iconic saucer shaped space ship.

The illusion used LED lights attached to a two-ton exoskeleton which was flown by a Black Hawk helicopter over the Hudson River and along the New York City skyline ahead of last night’s US premiere.

Star Trek: Discovery takes place 10 years before the five-year mission of the original 1960s hit Star Trek, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham. The show will stream on Netflix internationally.

Remarkable Media CEO Simon Powell said: “Star Trek is such an iconic TV and film series that is loved by many, so we were thrilled to be asked by CBS to bring the U.S.S Discovery to life and take it to the skies of New York to promote its latest incarnation.

“It was one of the most challenging aerial executions we have done, but the effect of it flying across the New York skyline at night was stunning.”

The U.S.S. Discovery is the latest aerial visual created by Remarkable Media. Last year it achieved a Guinness World Record after partnering with MTV to fly the world’s largest flying digital video screen to celebrate the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) also in New York.
