Aussies shopping online has increased 8.7 per cent over the last 12 months according to the National Australia Bank’s recent online retail sales index.

NAB’s survey found online retail sales grew 1.7 per cent in February, an increase of 0.3 per cent rise in January.

Online sales may have increased almost nine per cent, but it wasn’t all bad news for traditional bricks and mortar stores who still managed a credible 3.7 per cent increase in sales year on year.

And, to put things in perspective, 93 per cent of all retail sales in Australia still come from traditional retail outlets. Online sales to the 12 months to February were worth $16.7 billion.

According to NAB, the fastest growing segment for online sales were for toys and electronic games; albeit coming from a small base.

But it wasn’t all great news for online retailers. Sales surged pre-Christmas 2014 but slumped back once traditional retailers went into January sales mode.

The NAB report also found that online spending on clothes and fashion had been subdued while spending on groceries and homewares had picked up in the early months of 2015.
