A new (and albeit somewhat odd) study into the eating habits of Australians has found that half of us eat our evening meal in front of the TV. And younger people are three times more likely to eat in front of their favourite TV shows than older generations.

And in good news for Kochie and Karl, 35 per cent of Aussies admit to eating breakfast in front of the box.

The study, by YouGov, found that rather than a threat to family life as we know it, eating in front of the TV is fast becoming the norm for Aussie households.

Rise of Couch Potatos

Though Aussies enjoy meals in front of the TV in similar numbers across all ages, younger generations are more than twice as likely to eat dinner on the sofa than older generations. Just one in five (18 per cent) Aussies over 55 eat dinner on the sofa, whereas nearly half (46 per cent) of those aged 18-34 do.

Young people are also six times more likely to eat dinner in their room; nearly a third (31 per cent) of 18-34 years do, compared with five per cent of over 55s.

Conversely, older generations are slightly more likely to eat dinner at a dining table than younger generations. Nearly three quarters (72 per cent) of those over 55 eat dinner at a dining table, compared with two-thirds (66 per cent) of 18-34 year olds.

With TV dinners now so commonplace in Australia, perhaps it’s about time to re-think our attitudes to them. If nothing else, shows like Gogglebox have demonstrated just how sociable watching TV together can be. Perhaps TV dinners are helping to bring Aussie families together, rather than tearing them apart after all.
