Eighty-Seven Per Cent Of Aussie Men “Unhappy” With Their Bodies: LYNX Study
A study released by male grooming brand, LYNX, is encouraging guys to be themselves and dispel stereotypes with personality seen as more attractive than a chiselled set of abs.
The study talked to 4500 men and women around the world, including 1000 in Australia and has revealed that while nine out of 10 women find guys most attractive when they’re comfortable being themselves, male perceptions of what makes them attractive are shaped by labels and expectations.
The study reports almost half of Australian men (49 per cent) are afraid of looking different, for fear of being judged or labelled – the highest percentage from all 12 countries surveyed.
Strikingly, only 11 per cent of men in Australia strongly agree they feel like an attractive male, indicating many guys continue to feel a tremendous amount of pressure to fulfil an unachievable stereotype.
“We know from years of research that what makes a guy attractive is… him. His strengths, his weaknesses, his individuality and most of all how he expresses it,” says Jon McCarthy, LYNX marketing director.
“But despite that, a lot of guys don’t feel comfortable being themselves. Because they’re afraid of what people will say. Of being labelled. Of embarrassment. Afraid that what’s unique about them isn’t considered attractive or acceptable. We want to change that.”
Other findings from the study found:
- Only 11% of guys strongly agree that they feel like an attractive guy
- 13% of Aussie guys strongly agree that they’re happy with their body
- Less than half (45%) of Aussie guys believe there is something distinctive about them which stands out
- When it comes to male stereotypes, 57% of guys agreed they are a part of Australian culture
- 70% of Aussie men believe guys should strive to be as individual as possible in their style regardless ofsocietal restraints
- 72% of Aussie blokes agree that violence is a cowardly way to resolve conflict
- Just over half (57%) of Aussie guys believed they have a personal style
- 34% of Aussie guys thought they were more attractive when they looked different or stood out
And what did the ladies have to say?
• 80% of Aussie girls find guys most attractive when they are comfortable being themselves
• 73% of Aussie girls like it when a guy has his own personal style
• 72% of Aussie girls believe guys would be more attractive if they stopped trying to ‘be a man’ an started being themselves
• 80% of girls like it when guys are comfortable with talking about their personal problems
• 69% of Aussie girls find a man’s hidden side attractive (ability to talk about feelings, expressing emotions, dancing, cooking)
• 87% of Aussie girls believe violence is a cowardly way to resolve conflict
• 89% of Aussie girls like it when a guy is comfortable with just being himself, without fear of being judged
• 76% of Aussie girls find it cute or attractive when a guy has the confidence to admit or do something he would normally only do in private.
And what did the boys and girls have to say?
- 41% of Aussies believe a good sense of humour is the most important attribute in making a man attractive
- Over a quarter (26%) of Australians believe evidence of wealth is the least important attribute in making a man attractive
