Male marketing professionals’ salary expectations “plummeted” over the previous year but things are looking up according to Alliance Recruitment.

The level of pay increase expected when shifting jobs dropped 27% last year amongst male marketers, Alliance’s survey of 900 local marketing professionals found.

Paul Barbaro, Alliance executive general manager, said budget freezes and cuts resulted in a “salary reality check”.

“We’ve seen job availability tighten considerably across most marketing disciplines causing professionals to reduce their expectations around remuneration,” Barbaro said.

“The good news is our intelligence suggests that the second half of 2014 will see growth and we’re already some signs of this as consumers open their wallets again.”

While men are expecting less of a pay increase when switching roles women are after more.

Female marketers now hope for an increase of $15,600 when joining a new company, up from $14,807.

““The data also reflects the focus of women on lifestyle conditions, such as maternity leave and flexible working arrangements, particularly after child birth, so it often takes a bigger salary incentive for them to consider moving between companies,” Barbaro said.

Marketing consultants have been the hardest hit, with their salary increase expectations down a huge 60%.

The amount social media practitioners can demand from a new employer has dropped 22% to a pay increase of $11,625.

“Social media is still a burgeoning area of expertise but there’s less mysticism around it now resulting in a more realistic view about the salaries companies will pay.”

Those working in online and digital marketing however have increased their expectations.

Digital marketing managers now expect a remuneration increase of $16,874 when offered a role at a new company, a rise of 31% on previous expectations. General employees in the digital/online marketing space are now looking for an extra $12, 485.
