DeGeneres selfie, a product placement triumph for Samsung

Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded ‘super selfie’ broke Twitter as fans rushed to share what appeared to be a spontaneous picture but was actually product placement.

Live during the Oscars broadcast DeGeneres’ recruited Bradley Cooper to take a selfie featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Lupita Nyong’o and others.

The picture was taken on a Samsung Galaxy. Samsung Galaxy was an official sponsor of the Academy Awards.

Minutes after DeGeneres’ tweeted the picture Twitter crashed momentarily under demand for the picture.

Having been tweeted more than 2.946m times and received more than 1.596m ‘Favourites’ the picture was a marketing coup for Samsung Galaxy.

However the glow of Twitter dominance was tarnished by DeGeneres’ who reverted back to her trusted iPhone while backstage.

While on stage the talk show host appeased the sponsor but her backstage pictures were missing the Samsung Galaxy tag and instead featured ‘via Twitter for iPhone’ as seen when using TweetDeck.

At least two of DeGeneres’ pictures posted to Twitter were taken off her iPhone, including her selfie with Channing Tatum (below).
