Havas Melbourne has launched a new campaign for multicultural broadcaster SBS, as the organisation seeks to promote the importance and benefits of an inclusive workplace.

The campaign idea for ‘The real you matters’ explores how some Australians can, and will, hide an essential part of who they are out of fear of being excluded, judged or shown negative bias. It shines a light on this behaviour through a film highlighting exaggerated scenarios where employees go out of their way to hide a part of themselves from their work colleagues and managers.

Supporting this concept, a recent study by the Diversity Council of Australia found employees in inclusive workplaces are 19 times more likely to be satisfied with their job and four times more likely to stay with their employer. However, in the last 12 months, one in five Australians have experienced discrimination in the workplace and felt the need to cover up aspects of who they are in front of their co-workers and managers.

SBS recognises that when people can be themselves, they achieve their best and help others to as well. Inclusion plays an important part in a happy and productive environment; it drives employee engagement, increases discretionary effort, productivity and improves mental health.

Stig Bell, director of people and culture at SBS, said: “At SBS we are a very diverse employer, but we recognise that diversity is just one of the building blocks for a great workplace. Inclusion is at the core of building a happier, more productive environment for everyone, because an inclusive workplace creates a place where diverse thoughts, ideas, and opinions are freely shared. This improves our business’ ability to adapt and grow. This campaign builds on the already positive work that SBS has done in this space.”

Damian Royce, ECD at Havas Melbourne said: “It is encouraging that there is so much conversation occurring about workplace diversity. In contrast, however, there is relatively little discussion given to the more complex notion of inclusiveness, so it was a great opportunity to help SBS highlight this important issue.”
