Mobile Foxtel launches on iPhone

Telstra customers will be able to stream Foxtel channels on their iPhone’s following the launch of Mobile Foxtel.

iPhone customers (OS 3.1 and over) can subscribe to Mobile Foxtel to watch more than 30 channels on Telstra’s Next G network including Fox 8, Fox Sports and MTV, as Telstra looks to boost its mobile video content. Telstra, which owns a 50% stake in Foxtel, also offers video-on-demand services through BigPond TV and BigPond Sports.

While iPhone owners will be the first to experience the new video streaming initiative, Mobile Foxtel will not be limited to Apple’s handset, with the service set to be rolled out progressively over a range of Telstra Next G handsets in the coming months. Freddie Jansen Van Nieuwenhuizen, director of Telstra product management, said the iPhone was a logical first choice for delivering an “improved” mobile TV experience.

“Generally, iPhone users are already accustomed to consuming a vast array of media on their devices,” he said. “Mobile Foxtel provides an exciting opportunity for these customers to enjoy top quality programming while on the go.

“Downloading video or watching streamed content is becoming increasingly popular and according to a recent Sensis report, four in 10 Australians download video or watch streamed video content, up four percentage points in the past year.”

Patrick Delany, executive director of sales and product at Foxtel, added: “A mobile phone is no longer just for making and receiving calls, it’s become a multimedia tool.”

Mobile Foxtel packages range from $12 to $18 per month and streaming TV content does not incur any data charges.
