Fairfax will relaunch its website for The Australian Financial Review, after admitting "we got it wrong”.
The announcement comes after ongoing speculation that the AFR's site, which was launched in June 1995 and rebranded in March this year, had failed to attract enough subscribers with its current model.
Fairfax managing director, David Kirk, said the move was set for the end of next month or November.
Amplifying on remarks made at an Australian School of Business event in Sydney, he said: "We got it wrong at the outset, we are going to get it right so stick with us. We are going to make AFR.com more accessible for users - but let's go back to the beginning. There are four dimensions at work here: news and information, archives, investment and financial tools, and a digital rights management system." He said the software it is currently using is "not ideal to meet all these purposes in an optimal way", and it is currently working on putting the right software in place to deliver better functionality and speed.
