The first night of Australian Idol’s fifth series on Ten was Sunday’s most watched show and drew an increased average audience on last year.
It was the second most-watched launch episode of Australian Idol with an average audience of 1.65 million, up 272,000 viewers on last year.
Between 7.30pm and 9.10pm Ten had 47.3% of the 18-49 demographic. In comparison Nine’s 60 minutes and Hostage between that time had 24% of the same demographic, while Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy scored 28.7% for Seven.
Ten’s chief programming officer David Mott said: “It’s too early to make predictions but judging by last night’s results, and with the benefit of Dicko’s return, I’d say that this year’s Idol is going to be one of our strongest.”
Australian Idol provided a lead-in for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Debate securing 36.9% of the 18-49 demographic, against 32.7% for Nine and 30.5% for Seven.
