Rockstar: Supernova has become the highest rating general entertainment series ever on pay-TV, according to figures released by OzTAM this week.
The series, which concluded on the weekend with Canadian singer Lukas Rossi being chosen to lead new rock group Supernova, attracted an impressive audience during the past 11 weeks for Fox8, Foxtel’s flagship entertainment channel.
OzTAM results show the two-hour finale of Rockstar: Supernova attracted a combined average audience of 290,000 and reached almost 600,000 viewers.
Throughout the series, it consistently ranked as the number one program on pay-TV when it has screened each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night.
In weekly results for Week 36 (September 3-9) Rockstar: Supernova was the most watched program across the platform for the entire week (including sports events and movies).
Overall, the average audience was up a massive 52% on Rockstar: INXS, with Thursday’s series finale up 18% on last year’s corresponding episode, which saw JD Fortune, also Canadian, chosen as the new lead singer for Australian band INXS.
This year’s series also achieved a Foxtel voting record with the number of interactive votes cast via SMS and red button, with votes up 75% from the first series.
“This is a phenomenal result for Fox8 and also for subscription television as a whole,” Foxtel’s executive director of television and marketing, Brian Walsh, said.
“It is also another strong indication that the viewing landscape is changing with subscription television continuing its steady growth pattern.
“We are now looking forward to the third series of Rock Star which Mark Burnett Productions is already working on and other new signature series from the Mark Burnett group.”
