Radio ratings: Brisbane market heats up
Tim Addington

The battle to claim the number two position in Brisbane’s commercial radio market has intensified with three stations separated by less than one rating point.

While DMG-owned Nova 106.9 remains the number one station in the city, changes have taken place in the battle for the number two spot.

Austereo’s Triple M, which was second in the last survey, slipped by 1.3 points to fourth position with a 10.3% share, while sister Austereo station, B105, jumped from fourth to second, showing a modest increase of 0.5 point to 11.1% share of the 5.30am to midnight total audience. ARN’s 97.3 held steady in third, with a 0.3 point gain to 11% audience share. Triple M’s Brisbane fall comes as its breakfast show The Cage dropped by 2.3 points to 9.3%.

Adelaide’s 5AA, which dropped 2.3 points in the previous Nielsen Media Research survey losing its number one position, bounced back to first place with a 1.1 point gain and 17% share. The ARN-owned station saw audience increases in its breakfast, drive, and evening shows. ARN’s Mix102.3 which had taken 5AA’s position, slipped back to second after a 0.6 point drop to 16.4% share. Nova 91.9 remained in third with 11.9%, while Austereo’s SAFM also held its fourth spot at 11.1%.

In Melbourne, 3AW remains the most popular commercial station, increasing by 0.8 points from the last survey to a 15.5% share. Austereo’s Fox FM held on to second, and Nova remained the third most popular commercial station in the city, despite a 0.4 point fall. Triple M clawed back to fourth spot with a 1.5 point rise giving it a 8.7% share at the expense of ARN’s classic hit station Gold FM which dropped 0.8% to 7.9% and into fifth place.

Despite narrowing the gap with rival 2Day FM in Sydney during the last radio rating survey, Nova 96.9 slipped further away from second spot after a strong performance from 2Day which increased by 1.3 points to 10.5% share. Nova increased by just 0.1 point to 8.8%. 2UE slid by 0.7 points to 7.9% in fourth position, while WSFM remained in fifth at 7.2% share of the commercial stations. Macquarie Media’s 2GB held the top position with a 12.7% share even though it dropped by 1 point. 2Day FM’s breakfast duo of Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O recorded the biggest increase of any radio show in the city, rising by 2.2 points to 11.4%, backed by an extensive marketing campaign and the start of Australian Idol, of which Sandilands is a judge.

Perth’s Mix 94.5 owned by Austereo, continues its strong first place lead increasing by 0.7 points to 17.5 %. Southern Cross Broadcasting’s 96FM was second with 12.3%. Nova 93.7 managed to sneak into third spot, with 11% share, despite a small 0.2 point drop. Nova’s ascendancy came after Austereo’s Today Network station 92.9 fell by 0.9 points to 10.6% and into fourth from third position last survey.
