Nova suffers in radio ratings

DMG Radio’s Nova network took the largest slice of the Brisbane radio pie in the second ratings period of the year, growing its share to as much as 36.7% for 18 to 24 year olds, a shining light in a set of poor figures for the network.

The network rocketed into the number one position in the city, wining the largest number of listeners at breakfast, morning, afternoon and overall. Elsewhere in the country, however, Nova networks were hit by plummeting listener numbers, according to Nielsen figures.

In Sydney, Nova 96.9 lost 14 points in the teen market, also dropping in the under-25 category.

Breakfast hosts Merrick and Rosso and Kate Ritchie managed to rally almost half a point share of the day part to maintain the second largest listener numbers for an FM network with 8.1% market share behind the 2Day FM breakfast show with 11.4% share.

However, Macquarie Radio Network’s 2GB retained its hold on the 5.30 to 9 AM slot with 17.3% share, despite slipping 0.3 points during the period between February 1, and March 21. The network retained the number one spot in the city overall ahead of 2Day FM.

Austereo-owned 2Day FM once again pipped Nova to post in the drive slot, with golden boys Hamish and Andy growing market share by 2.4 points.

Further south to Melbourne, Nova 100 also reduced its overall share of the radio market. It dropped more than 7 points of its share in the 18 to 24 year old market and was down in all day parts, except for the breakfast slot, where it gained less than one point share.

Austereo’s Fox FM took out the city’s drive slot with Hamish and Andy once again responsible for growing the network’s share by 2.1 points to 21.1% of the day part.

Overall, Fairfax Radio’s 3AW held onto the number one position in the city with 13.8% share, despite dipping 2.1 points from last survey. Fox was the city’s leading FM station with 12.8% share, ahead of Nova 100, with 7.7% share.

It was a close finish for first position in Adelaide, with 5AA and SA FM neck and neck in the race for the city’s crown. The two stations each gained 13.1% share overall measured by age, but 5AA beat SA FM by 0.1% to take out the day overall, with 13.3% share. The station also won the breakfast and morning slots, but was a distant second to SA FM in the drive slot.

In Perth, Nova 93.7 lost 10.0 points share in the fickle under-18-years market, but picked up listeners overall when measured across both age and day parts.

But Mix 94.5 retained its place on top of the city’s radio offerings, earning 15.2% share of listeners overall ahead of Austereo’s 92.9 with 13.0% share and 96 FM with 11.9% of the market.
