 PRODUCT LAUNCHES
Xbox shoots to number one in first week

Analyst group Gfk announced Xbox 360 has recorded the highest-ever console sales figures in Australia selling an estimated 30,421 units in its first four days of trading.

Xbox topped its arch rival Sony by bettering launch sales figures of both Sony’s Playstation 2 and best selling hand-held-PSP at 3,366 and 27,055 respectively.

Daniel Morse senior games analyst GfK, told B&T the new record sets the standard by which others [competitors] in the industry will seek to better.

“The Xbox 360 has set a new benchmark for a console launch in Australia,” he said.

With consoles in such high consumer demand some retailers have already reported selling out of the prized console.

Australia’s largest technology retailer- Harvey Norman, told B&T that supply is tight but shipments of new stock were arriving each week to keep up with market demand.

“Demand has exceeded expectations. Supply is tight but we are confident in the medium term Microsoft will address this,” said Rutland Smith, Harvey Norman general manager computers and communications.

Microsoft said they were very excited by the reaction to Xbox 360 and that they expected to easily reach their launch forecast.

The wider gaming industry would also receive a boost from the console’s launch with Gfk predicting strong software sales with a games attach rate of 2.6 games per console.
