 REGULATION
AFA applauds positive portrayal of women outdoors
Sarah Plaskitt

THE Advertising Federation of Australia has welcomed a Victorian Government recommendation that the advertising industry sign a charter committing to the positive portrayal of women in outdoor advertising.

The recommendation is contained within a report on the portrayal of women in outdoor advertising which was prepared by an advisory committee reporting to the Victorian Minister for Women’s Affairs, Mary Delahunty.

AFA Victorian chairman Russel Howcroft said the report offered a number of practical suggestions for dealing with the portrayal of women in outdoor advertising.

Importantly he said it places the onus on the industry to regulate itself.

He said the AFA would be prepared to sign a charter committing to the positive portrayal of women in outdoor advertising and he would recommend that this charter be included with the AFA Agency Code of Ethics.

He also said the AFA had previously offered to provide its members a referral service on contentious advertisements and it looked forward to furthering this concept with the broader industry.
