Promotional activities for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 were never going to be small affairs as thousands of drenched gamers from around the world who descended onto Sydney’s Coogee Beach found out.
The Water Balloon Challenge at Coogee Beach on Saturday (22/4) saw 2921 participants throw more than 55,000 water balloon—approximately the same number of Xbox 360 consoles that have been sold in the country since launching last month.
Gamers traveled from Latin America, Europe, Asia and the United States to take part in the challenge that broke the world record previously held by Spain, where 2677 people threw 50855 balloons in 2005.
The publicity stunt to celebrate Xbox 360’s one-month birthday, also doubled as a fundraiser for the Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club with five dollars from every registration fee from water balloon participants donated to the club.
The money raised will be used to upgrade our life saving training facilities and replace critical life saving equipment.
“This was a great chance for us to do something fun for all of those thousands of Australians who helped make the Xbox 360 launch such a success,” Xbox Australia/NZ regional director David McLean said.
“It was a great chance for everyone to jump in and remember the joy and fulfillment that comes from playing games of any kind.”
