Variety #OscarsSoWhite Cover Wrapped In An Advert For The Martian

Entertainment magazine Variety has addressed the issue of #OscarsSoWhite backlash in its latest cover, ironically the “Shame on us’ statement has been covered by an ad for Matt Damon film The Martian.

Last week the internet erupted in anger after, for the second year in a row, no actor or actress or colour was nominated for an Oscar. The backlash has caused many people in Hollywood including Will Smith, Mark Ruffalo and Spike Lee to boycott the ceremony.

In response to the backlash, Variety‘s next issue features a cover an Oscar statue cast in white along with the words “SHAME ON US.”

Screenwriter and director Eric Haywood has pointed out that the magazine has been covered by a full-page ad for The Martian; a film predominately starring white people and who only white people are Oscar nominated.

The sci-fi film was relentlessly teased during The Golden Globes for being nominated and winning the Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical and Matt Damon winning Best Actor, Comedy or Musica- despite the fact the film is not a comedy or a musical. The Martian is Oscar nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Picture, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and Writing (adapted screenplay).
