Reddit says it will donate more than $827,000 of its ad revenue to 10 charities of reddit users’ choice.

The online community launched its support of charitable giving in February last year by announcing it will donate 10% of its advertising revenue from 2014 to various charities.

Well, time is up and Reddit’s product manager Ryan Merket announced in a blog post the online site would be donating more than $827,000 to 10 different charity organisations.

“We closed the books on 2014 and our total ad revenue was $8,276,594.93. Meaning we are donating $827,659.49! 10 charities chosen by our community will each receive $82,765.95,” Merket said in the post.

Reddit users can vote for which charities are included in the donations. Reddit has teamed up with Charity Navigator who has given the site access to its charity database.

“You are allowed to vote for as many different charities as you like, but you are limited to one vote per charity,” added Merket.

When the announcement was made initially at the beginning of 2014, Reddit said it wasn’t going to rule out the smaller ads.

“Whether it’s a large ad campaign or a $5 sponsored headline on reddit, we intend for all ad revenue this year to benefit not only reddit as a platform but also to support the goals and causes of the entire community,” the post said.

“We want to show that advertising doesn’t just support the reddit platform, it also directly supports the causes and goals of reddit as a whole.”

Reddit users have already jumped on board, although the amount of charities available has some a little frazzled.

“There are so many good ones,” said reddit user funnygreensquares

Great things to support that I’ve never even thought of. Which ones should be supported the most?”

“That is a great idea – already found a few I wouldn’t have thought of, including the Internet Archive or didn’t know about, like the Machine Intelligence Research Institute,” user misnamed also said.

To vote, users had to have made an account by 10am today, and voting stays open for a week. Head here to vote.
