Australia’s biggest telco, Telstra, is the latest to pull all its Google advertising as the woes continue for the global tech behemoth.

The ongoing concern by brands that their ads are being shown next to hate videos on YouTube has seen a global backlash against Google reported to have cost it over $1 billion in ad dollars over the past 10 days.

This latest Telstra boycott adds to a string of high profile Australian brands that have pulled all their spends in recent days and includes the likes of Toyota, Tourism Australia, Bunnings, Vodafone, Foxtel, Holden, Kia and Hyundai.

A Telstra spokesperson said: “We have strict guidelines around our brand and advertising and we are working with Google to ensure these guidelines are upheld.

“In the meantime we have made the decision to pause our advertising on YouTube until we are satisfied there is an appropriate level of protection for our brand.”

Interestingly, Google itself has reportedly found its own ads next to racist YouTube videos.
