APN Outdoor To Launch New Zealand’s Largest Digital Billboard

Outdoor media company, APN Outdoor plans to launch New Zealand’s largest high-resolution Digital Billboard at Auckland Airport.

The new screen is part of a wider digital development plan from APN Outdoor, which will see a massive overhaul to Auckland Airport’s current advertising inventory.

Known as Apollo, named after the Greek God of Light, APN Outdoor’s new site will measure 19.75 x 4.75 metres. It will offer advertisers 94 sqm worth of advertising space and will be the largest Digital Billboard in New Zealand’s history.

Apollo will be located on the corner of George Bolt and Tom Pearce Drives, a high-volume road intersection, providing advertisers with a daily audience of over 55,000 travellers and airport visitors. Standing at 6.8 metres high, the screen will incorporate a contemporary design element featuring a 57 degree ‘arc’ curvature.

Additionally, Apollo will comprise a screen resolution of 468 x 1944 pixels, the highest for Outdoor screens available in the world and capable of displaying 281 trillion colours. APN Outdoor has chosen Daktronics as their technology supply partner for this Auckland Airport redevelopment.

Blair Robertson, region manager of Daktronics commented: “We have been a proud partner of APN Outdoor since launching New Zealand’s first Digital Billboard in 2013, which utilised our leading-edge LED technology. Their digital development plans at Auckland Airport are amongst the most impressive I’ve seen in my ten years at Daktronics and we are very excited to be teaming up with them again to build this new landmark screen.

“Featuring the latest technology currently available in the Outdoor space, Apollo demonstrates both Daktronics and APN Outdoor’s commitment to using the most advanced and reliable LED hardware and intelligent management system available anywhere in the world.”

Apollo will be sold in a two-week sales cycle, with advertisers on an eight-second ad rotation.

Phil Clemas, general manager at APN Outdoor New Zealand commented: “After launching New Zealand’s first Digital Billboard last year plus our Digital Billboard Network in July this year and seeing the success of both, we are really looking forward to taking our digital expansion to the next level through our redevelopments at Auckland Airport and specifically with the launch of Apollo.

“As the largest Digital Billboard in the country with the highest quality resolution, we very are proud to be offering our clients a site that commands attention through its sheer size, not to mention the strength of its scale. On top of this, Apollo provides APN Outdoor advertisers with all the benefits of digital including minimal lead times, immediacy of posting, day-part messaging and mobile/social convergence. We are excited about bringing Apollo to market and continuing to lead the Outdoor industry when it comes to all things digital.”

APN Outdoor’s redevelopment of Auckland Airport is currently under way with a completion date scheduled for February 2015. Apollo will be live from December this year.
