Optus is again in trouble for making dubious claims in advertisements about its potential internet speeds.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has this morning slapped a $51,000 fine on the telco after it claimed it could offer customers “NBN-like speeds” when the service was actually far slower than claimed.

In a statement this morning, ACCC boss Rod Sims said: “As consumers migrate to the NBN, the ACCC’s action in this matter is a timely reminder to broadband internet providers that they must not misrepresent the performance of the services they are selling.”

It’s not the first time Optus has been caught out making misleading claims about its internet connection. In 2011 it was fined a whopping $5 million by the Federal Court for misleading ads about its internet plans to customers.
