Sydney Harbour to blaze with Imagination

This Saturday night one of the biggest spectacles since the 200 Olympics will unfold on the world’s most famous harbour as the Royal Australian Navy’s week long fleet review comes to a jaw-dropping head.

Behind the Royal Australian Navy's spectacular celebration of its 100th anniversary since first sailing into Sydney Harbour is creative agency Imagination, as reported in B&T in March this year.

The huge public event, which will rival Sydney New Year’s Eve, also an event Imagination is the creative team for, is expected to see more than 1 million people crowd around the harbour foreshore including 8000 international sailors.

Imagination’s work will see seven warships positioned around the harbour being used as bases from which to launch pyros and laser displays. The story of the Royal Australian Navy from 1913 to 2013 will be the narrative for a 30 minute multimedia story being projected onto both sides of the Opera House. This is the first time both sides of the Opera House has been used, Imagination’s managing director Antony Gowthorp told B&T.

“After our creative and writing teams sat down and came up with the most relevant moments in time to tell the RAN’s story, we then dived into the archives to find footage to help tell that story. Now we’re ready to broadcast it onto the most amazing canvas in the world,” he said.

The entire Fleet Review is going to be bigger than anything ever held on Sydney Harbour, with warships and tall-ships from 40 countries crowding into the harbour.

Gowthorp admitted to being nervous “because with an event of this size that includes fly overs and so many warships and so on, you don’t get to do a rehearsal”.

The 30 minute spectacular will be shown on the ABC and the soundtrack accompanying the show will be aired on 2Day FM.
