Director Patrick Hughes from independent Aussie production company Finch has been snapped up by Sylvester Stallone to direct the third instalment of The Expendables.
Hughes was eventually selected after a long-winded selection process by Sly Stallone. There was talk of Mel Gibson, John Woo and even Stallone himself, before Hughes was chosen.
Hughes caught Stallone’s eye with his 2010 Western thriller Red Hill.
Stallone announced his new director on Twitter after a series of teaser tweets.
Stallone posted on Twitter: “Love John Woo but he is working in China. EX3 needs freshness, class and much badass… Found it… Blood Sweat and Fears, coming soon.”
He followed this with: “The director is an Aussie…”
Then: “NOT Mel… Fresh talent. He directed a Damn good film 2 years ago… Think.”
And: “Ok… Last HINT. He is NEW… the last film he did was more RED than BLUE…”
Hughes, who has just finished shooting the latest Bonds spot for Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, is jetting off to LA this week to start pre-production on The Expendables 3, which is set to be shot across three countries from August.
