An online competition to find a “compelling” alternative to Yahoo!’s new logo has received more than 5,000 entries after the design community found the global revamp underwhelming.

Last week Yahoo! revealed a new logo on Tumblr, sporting slimmer letters the stamp remained true to the brand’s colour palette and retained its distinctive exclamation mark.

While Yahoo’s chief marketing officer, Kathy Savitt, described the new logo as “whimsical”, modern, fresh and proud with "a human touch", the design community felt the change was unremarkable.

Crowdsourced design website 99designs launched a competition to find an alternative.

The community’s designs were decidedly braver, some did away with the exclamation point, the purple and instead embraced everything from a dolphin’s tale, dropped everything but the ‘y’ and bubble letters.

The winning design (pictured below) was created by Greydesigns.

Spokesperson for the 99designs platform said the site would be happy to donate any of the entries to Yahoo!. “We’re still waiting for that call from Marissa (Yahoo! CEO) should she decide the public outcry over the new logo necessitates a rethink.”

The site launched a similar competition last year when online auction site eBay’s new logo was labelled “boring”.

Meanwhile, Yahoo!7 confirmed last week it is looking to update its logo down the track but said it would not embrace the refreshed global logo (pictured left). For more click here.
