Hipsterness mapped out

A new map has been created to point Melbourne’s hipsters towards their next so-not-cool-its-cool venue to hang out in.

The map is sure to be a hit with the hipsters of Melbourne’s advertising world.

It points to almost 150 venues that creator and self-professed “geek translator” Maia Sauren of software company ThoughtWorks and her team deemed ‘hipster’.

It covers cafes, bars, retailers (or should we say boutiques?) and entertainment venues.

Sauren told Fairfax’s The Age: ''You don't really know how to define somewhere that's hipster, but you know it when you see it.''

How does the internet define ‘hipster’. The top result is by Urban Dictionary which starts off its 699 word definition with:  “Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.”
